5 Signs Your Shower Is Leaking (Before You See Water)

Most shower leaks don’t start with a dramatic puddle on the floor.

They start quietly. Slow. Hidden. And by the time you actually see water, the damage is usually already bigger than it needed to be.

At HUGE Handyman, we’ve seen a lot of “small shower issues” turn into drywall repairs, cabinet swelling, flooring damage, and full shower rebuilds — simply because the early warning signs were ignored.

Here are five signs your shower may be leaking before it becomes obvious.

1) Caulk keeps cracking or pulling away

If the caulk at the corners or along the tub keeps separating, that can be more than “bad caulk.” It may be a sign of movement, moisture, or improper sealing in the first place. Re-caulking over and over without fixing the cause usually turns into a repeat problem.

2) Grout looks dark even after it dries

Grout that stays dark, blotchy, or damp-looking in the same area can be a sign that water is getting where it shouldn’t. Some moisture is normal in a shower, but consistent discoloration in one spot can point to water sitting behind the tile.

3) Paint or drywall outside the shower starts changing

If the wall outside the shower starts bubbling, peeling, softening, or staining, that’s a major red flag. Water often travels and shows up outside the shower area first, especially near corners and plumbing walls.

4) Musty smell that doesn’t go away

A musty smell that lingers in the bathroom even after cleaning is often caused by moisture trapped in places you can’t see. If it’s persistent, it’s worth taking seriously before mold becomes part of the conversation.

5) Tile sounds hollow or feels loose

Loose tile, hollow-sounding tile, or cracking grout lines can mean poor bonding or moisture damage behind the tile. Tile shouldn’t shift or sound empty — and when it does, it usually gets worse over time.

If something feels off, it’s better to check it early than to wait for visible water damage. Most shower leaks are fixable when caught early, and much more expensive when ignored. Here is an example of a shower that was left leaking way too long.
