How We Waterproof a Shower the Right Way

A great-looking shower means nothing if it’s leaking behind the walls. At HUGE Handyman, we don’t just focus on tile patterns and finishes—we start with the foundation: proper waterproofing.

It’s the most important part of any shower build, and unfortunately, it’s also one of the most commonly skipped or rushed by less experienced installers.

Why Waterproofing Matters

Showers see constant moisture—on the surface, in the air, and behind the tile. Tile and grout alone are not waterproof. Without a proper barrier system, water seeps into the walls and subfloor, causing:

Mold and mildew

Rotting wood or drywall

Loose tiles and grout cracks

Costly hidden repairs down the road

That’s why we take extra care before the tile ever goes up.

Our Shower Waterproofing Process

Here’s how we build a shower that lasts:

Prep and Reinforcement

We inspect and reinforce the framing, install backer board (like cement board), and clean all surfaces for bonding.

Liquid Waterproofing Membrane

We use professional-grade products like LATICRETE Hydro Ban to apply a full liquid membrane. It creates a seamless, flexible barrier that seals corners, seams, niches, and around the drain.

Flood Testing

Before tiling, we test the pan for leaks by plugging the drain and filling it with water for 24 hours. If it doesn’t pass, we don’t move forward.

Flashing and Sealing

We waterproof all curb tops, wall joints, and penetrations with mesh fabric or preformed corners as needed for extra strength.

Final Inspection

We don’t tile until everything is dry, cured, and passed inspection—either ours or the city’s, depending on the job.

It’s Not Optional—It’s Standard

This isn’t an “upgrade” or a fancy add-on—it’s just how we do it. If someone’s quoting you a lower price and skipping waterproofing or rushing through it, the risk isn’t worth the savings.

At HUGE Handyman, we want your shower to look amazing and hold up for years. That starts behind the tile.
